People with AuDHD often balance a need for routine with a need for novelty.
Quick answer

AuDHD is a community term for people who are both autistic and have ADHD. Since 2013 the DSM-5 allows both diagnoses together, and research suggests 30% to 80% of autistic people also have ADHD traits. AuDHD can create push-pull experiences, such as needing routine yet craving novelty, and raises the risk of burnout, anxiety and depression. A comprehensive evaluation and neurodiversity-affirming support help.

Key takeaways

  • AuDHD is not a formal diagnosis but describes co-occurring autism and ADHD.
  • Autism and ADHD frequently overlap.
  • Traits can mask each other, so AuDHD is often missed.
  • Burnout and anxiety are common.
  • Support combines ADHD treatment, sensory and routine strategies, and acceptance.

You crave routine but get bored by it. You can hyperfocus for hours on something you love but cannot start a simple task. Social situations drain you, yet you also crave stimulation. If you identify with both autistic and ADHD traits, you may have heard the term AuDHD.

This guide explains what AuDHD is, how autism and ADHD interact, common signs in adults, why it is often missed, and how to get evaluated and supported. See also adult ADHD symptoms.

What is AuDHD?

Before 2013, the DSM did not allow autism and ADHD to be diagnosed together. Today they can be, and research shows high overlap: many autistic people meet criteria for ADHD, and many people with ADHD have autistic traits. Both are neurodevelopmental conditions with strong genetic links. “AuDHD” emerged from neurodivergent communities to describe the unique experience of having both.

Common signs of AuDHD in adults

  • Executive dysfunction and task paralysis
  • Sensory sensitivities (noise, light, textures)
  • Intense interests and hyperfocus
  • Social exhaustion and masking
  • Emotional intensity and rejection sensitivity
  • Need for routine alongside restlessness
  • Frequent burnout
  • Difficulty with transitions

Why AuDHD is often missed

Each condition can hide the other. ADHD impulsivity may mask autistic social differences, while autistic routines may compensate for ADHD disorganization. Women and people of color are especially likely to be overlooked. Many adults are diagnosed with one condition first, then later recognize the other.

Support and treatment

  1. Comprehensive evaluation

Assess both ADHD and autism, plus anxiety, depression and sleep.

  2. ADHD treatment

Medication can help attention and executive function; autistic people may be more sensitive to side effects, so doses are adjusted carefully.

  3. Sensory and routine strategies

Noise-canceling headphones, flexible routines, visual schedules.

  4. Neurodiversity-affirming therapy

Focuses on self-understanding, reducing masking and preventing burnout.

  5. Accommodations

At work or school, under the ADA.
